Travis Gillett Shoots Tecovas Performance Wear

When Tecovas set out to introduce a line of performance wear (see the project) built for people who actually work outdoors, they needed imagery that felt earned, not staged. They turned to Travis Gillett, a photographer and director whose portfolio reads like a field guide to the modern American West, to bring the collection to life.

Gillett shot the campaign across California’s high desert, a landscape defined by extremes: relentless sun, dry wind, cracked earth, and skies that seem to stretch past the edge of the frame. It’s the kind of environment that exposes anything artificial in about ten seconds, which is exactly the point. Tecovas built this collection around breathable fabrics, functional cuts, and materials that hold up through long, hot days of physical work. The best way to prove that isn’t a white-backdrop studio. It’s a dusty ranch road at golden hour.

The entire series was captured with natural light, a signature of Gillett’s documentary-influenced style. There are no reflectors softening the midday shadows, no strobes freezing a cowboy mid-stride. Instead, the light does what it does, raking across faces, burning out the edges of a shirt collar, pooling warm and low through the last hour of the day. The subjects move through the environment like they belong there, because in most cases, they do.

What makes the campaign work is that restraint. Gillett doesn’t romanticize ranch life so much as he simply records it with a sharp eye. A man on horseback at a gallop, a pair of hands working over a toolbox in the back of a truck, a quiet moment by a campfire, these are observations, not performances. The clothing recedes into the scene the way good workwear should: present, functional, and unbothered.

For Tecovas, it’s a campaign that matches the product philosophy, Western heritage filtered through practical design. For Gillett and the team at Unrivaled, it’s another project that proves the most compelling commercial imagery often comes from simply showing up, paying attention, and letting the landscape set the tone.
